Lake Mburo

20 05 2009

Caro: Today we drove across to Lake Mburo. Other than everyone having hideous hangovers (except me, trying not to be smug) it was a pretty uneventful trip.

Lunch was a highlight. We had our usual crowd of watchers and today we pulled out the frisbee and they joined in. Before we left we gave all the kids stickers and blew some bubbles for then to play with – both were well received.

Lake Mburo is famous for its zebra and we saw a fair few on the way to our campsite. We also saw some antelope we haven’t seen before – Topi and Ugandan Cob. We camped right by a lake  and five or six hippo hanging out close by kept us entertained while we had sundowners.

Next morning we were up at 5.30am for a walking safari. There were no particular highlights or noteworthy moments. But it was nice to be out in the bush – and to get some exercise.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

We got cracking early today and made it to Queen Elizabeth National Park in time for an lunch and then an afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga Channel which links two huge lakes in Uganda. This was great – as expected we saw loads of hippos (including a baby laying on the banks) and crocodiles and even managed to get the photo I’d been trying to catch of a hippo yawning. We had a drink at the bar afterwards and then headed back to the campsite for dinner and marshmallows on the campfire.

This campsite has a reputation for having lots of animals passing through it at night – many is the time that Dragoman groups have woken to find hippo and hyena spoor at the doors of their tent. Also, two lions had spent the day just near the campsite – so we were advised to try and avoid getting up to pee in the night – and if we really needed to, to shine our torch out and look for critters first. Suffice to say, I was crossing my legs till morning.
