A day in Rekjavik

27 02 2009

Tim: Up by 9am,  Woke up to a small blanket of snow!  A nice breakfast spread of cereals, cold meats, cheeses etc.  Good strong coffee.  Met a nice French family, and it transpired the owners of the guesthouse are French (the lady of the house having been in Iceland for over 40 years).

Wandered round town, picked up every last tourist brochure and started to think about what we were going to do for the next week. Incidentally, our whale watching was postponed – fingers crossed Saturday will prove better.

Went to the nearest thermal swimming pool, with two outdoor hot tubs – the choice between 39 and 41 degrees celcius….pretty damn hot!

After a bit of a kip, we went in search of a bar to watch Wales get beaten. Found the Gull Bar, serving Gull beer.  A small crowd of eight of us persisted – despite the bar blaring loud music above the game commentary. Given there were only two other drinkers in the bar, ’twas a shame. But they gradually got the message and the volume on the music crept down. People we met included a Welsh couple on a corporate jolly, a Welsh architect who’s been living in Iceland for two years, and a pair of finance guys out from England to do something on the Iceland banks. They wouldn’t expand…

We had a post-game bite and in walked the finance guys. Rekjavik is a really small place.
